Examples of Typography

The following are just some examples of typography that is used in advertising!

These have each motivated me to think more creatively about my fonts that i will use in my newspaper.

Typography

A Typeface refers to a group of characters, such as letters, numbers, and punctuation, that share a common design or style. Times New Roman, Arial, Helvetica and Courier are all typefaces.

Fonts refer to the means by which typefaces are displayed or presented. Helvetica in movable type is a font, as is a TrueType font file. The base line is the line upon which all type rests.
The x-height is the main part of the lower case which is equal to the height of the lowercase ‘x’

The Ascender is the part of the letter form of the lower case which rises above the x-height as in ‘b’, ‘d’, ‘f’, ‘h’, ‘k’ or ‘l’

The Ascender : Descender is the the part of the letter ‘g’, ‘j’, ‘p’, ‘q’ and ‘y’ that extends below the baseline.
The Ascender:Descender:Cap height is the height of the capital letter. The ascenders of some lowercase actually rises sometimes a little bit above the cap height.

The Serif is a short stroke that projects from the ends of the character. The serifs help to keep letters a certain distance apart, they link letters together to form word which helps reading and finally they help to differenciate individual letters.

The Counter is an enclosed or partially enclosed portion of a type character such as ‘p’, ‘q’ or ‘b’

Tracking, Kerning and Letterspacing concerns the distance between characters is controlled by tracking, kerning and letterspacing. Tracking is adjusted to change the space between characters consistently across a block of text. This may be used to increase legibility for an entire magazine article. Kerning is the reduction of space between characters, and letterspacing is the addition of space between characters. These smaller, precise adjustments may be used to tweak a specific word, such as in a logo design, or a large headline of a story in a newspaper. All of the settings may be experimented with to create artistic text effects.

After researching typography i have a much better understanding of letter typing and such, which will allow me to choose my fonts more suitably according to my magazine thoughout the development stages.
